White Balance problem
Hi, Sean, I bought your book "Exposure" during a nice trip in the USA (Very good book!! when publishing the next one). The ISO value of my camera was always set to min 400. Afther a few pages reading your book it's the first thing I changed: iso 100. I shot a lot of photo's in Yosemite valley (with a polarization filter, ISO 400, White balance on automatic an Aperture from f4 to F22 for large DOF. Nevertheless their is a blue mist on all my Photo's. I can change it with camera Raw (set white balance to automatic). You have any idea what I do wrong? The camera Nikon D80 is programmed to automatic White balance, so why do I have to change it again into automatic white Balance in Camera Raw to automatic in order to get rid of that blue mist and to get some color in the pictures. All my pictures were taken in Raw

Thanks for buying my book Luc! I'm writing two new books, hopefully out at the end of 2010, or early 2011 (thx for asking). A blue shift from WB could be shade or overcast (as mentioned in Chapter 2 - page 63. But truly, White Balance is a big topic, which could cover a whole chapter itself. You can, in Photoshop or Lightroom, color correct your WB with the WB tool- then correct all the others by selecting "previous RAW conversion". Or, you can use a grey/white WhiBal card (available at RawWorkFlow.com) in the field to get perfect WB every time. Hope this helps! Thanks!

digital cameras
Sean, first let me say what a pleasure it was to look at your photos, it's evident you love what you do. My question is what is the one mistake most people make when switching over to using a digital SLR from a manual one?

Thank you for the compliments Christine- yes, first picking up a camera at 11, and now a pro for 18 years, I've had lots of practice, as well as passion for it- it's a wonderful metaphor for life believe it or not. There are many things that amateurs do when switching, but one big mistake made is trusting their LCD screen for exposure (good to check composition and maybe the moment, but not exposure) and most end up shooting too fast thinking they can correct it all later. The beauty is in the details, and taking your time with your photos will produce much better results. thanks again!
